According
to the information card –
“Carbonised
trunks of cypress trees were found during the excavations carried out in 1989
in the old bed of the river Sarno south of Pompeii.
They
were part of a grove of about 100 cypresses located near a large rustic villa
and partially investigated back in the Bourbon era (1858).
The
trees were planted in staggered parallel rows, probably for timber.
Cupressus
sempervirens was indeed particularly prized for furniture and fittings due to
its hardness and resistance to decay.
Its
berries were also used in medicine as an antidote to snakebite.”
