According to Della Corte, between the doorways of VII.3.39 and VII.3.40, was written a curious painted graffito.
He thought it was written not much after the year 80BC.
Quintio(m) si
qui recusant assidat
ad asinum [CIL IV 2887]
Della Corte translated this as, “Chi rifiuta Quinzio, (o gli e contro nell’elezione), merita la pubblica fustigazione a dorso d’asino”
This roughly translates as “Who refuses Quinzio (or is against in the election), deserves the public flogging on a donkey’s back”.
See Della Corte, M., 1965. Case ed Abitanti di Pompei. Napoli: Fausto Fiorentino. (p. 125)
According to Fiorelli, at the end of the vicolo near these doorways, there were various painted graffiti. Two of them were
SALINESIBVS .
FELICITER
IVDICIS . AVG .
FELIC
The latter was painted in red letters on the upper part of the wall. Also inscribed in big letters was the word ROMA.
